Human trafficking is one of the fastest-growing crimes in Canada, and hotels can unknowingly become venues for exploitation. However, with the right training, hotel employees can help STOP it.

What Is Human Trafficking?

Human trafficking is using force, fraud, or coercion to lure victims and force them into labour or sexual exploitation. Sadly, human trafficking is one of the top three most common crimes that affect the hospitality industry, which includes hotels and motels, but also business, casinos, amusement parks, cruises and other tourism-related events. Making the hospitality industry a known sector for both sex and labour trafficking activity.

If human trafficking is taking place at your property, other criminal activities such as drug dealing and credit card fraud may also be taking place. These activities often go hand in hand, and pose a serious risk to your guests, your staff, and your business.


Why This Matters 

In 2022, Public Safety Canada reported the following statistics:

  • 3,996 incidents of human trafficking have been reported to police services in Canada between 2012-2022.
  • In 2022, 82% of incidents of human trafficking were reported in census metropolitan areas.
  • 94% of victims of police-reported human trafficking were women and girls.
  • 82% of persons accused of human trafficking were men.
  • 24% of victims of police-reported human trafficking were aged 17 and younger, 43% between 18-24, and 22% between 25-34.
  • 91% of victims were trafficked by someone they knew, and 34% were trafficked by an intimate partner.

By training every hotel employee, we can protect vulnerable individuals, safeguard our industry, and help law enforcement combat this growing crisis.
