Pool Operator Key Requirements

Ensuring the safety and compliance of hotel swimming pools and hot tubs in Alberta requires adherence to specific regulations outlined in the Public Swimming Pools Regulation (AR 204/2014) and the accompanying Pool Standards. Below is a summary of key requirements for hotel pool operators:

  1. Pool Operator Qualifications Training: Operators must be adequately trained in pool maintenance and safety protocols. 
  2. Water Quality Monitoring Chemical Levels: Regularly test and maintain appropriate levels of disinfectants (e.g., chlorine) and pH to ensure water safety. Microbiological Testing: Collect and submit water samples weekly for microbiological analysis to detect harmful bacteria.
  3. Filtration and Circulation Systems Continuous Operation: Ensure that filtration and circulation systems are operational at all times when the pool contains water. Automated Equipment: Install and maintain automated chemical feeding and monitoring equipment for pH and disinfectant levels. 
  4.  Safety Measures Signage: Display clear signs indicating pool rules, safety information, and maximum bather load. Emergency Plans: Develop and implement written policies for emergency situations, including contamination incidents. 
  5.  Record Keeping Operational Logs: Maintain detailed records of water quality tests, chemical usage, equipment maintenance, and any incidents. 6. General Sanitation Cleaning Protocols: Establish routine schedules for cleaning and disinfecting all areas of the pool

Pool Operator License

We are pleased to partner with the Alberta Association of Recreation Facility Personnel (AARFP) to offer AHLA members two pool operator courses that meet the requirements set out by Alberta Health:

Pool Operator Level 1 (Certified): This workshop provides a rigorous in-class and hands-on experience for those involved in swimming pool operations. Topics include water circulation/filtration, basic chlorine and saltwater chemistry, water balance, pool diseases and water testing. Successful candidates will receive the Swimming Pool Operator Level 1 Certificate.

Pool Operator Level 2 (Advanced): This course builds on the material presented at the Swimming Pool Operator Level I Course. Participants will learn to deal with more complex problems as swimming pool operators. Topics include water clarity, air quality, health of swimming pool water, diseases, pools and spas, oxidation reduction potential/controllers, circulation, specialty chemicals, energy management, steam rooms and saunas, risk management, custodial management, and lifecycle and preventive maintenance. Successful candidates will receive a Swimming Pool Operator Level 2 Certificate.
