3 Reasons to Prepare for the G7 Summit – And How We Can Help

As Alberta prepares to welcome the international spotlight during the upcoming G7 Summit (June 15 - 17), hotels and campgrounds across the province play a central role in ensuring the event is not only successful, but safe for everyone. High-profile events like the G7 Summit bring with them immense opportunities — but also unique challenges, especially in the areas of safety, security, and operational preparedness. As the official safety association for hotels and convention centers, we’re here to support you in making sure your team, your guests, and your property are safe, prepared, and professional. Here are three key reasons to start preparing now — and the resources available to help your hotel or campground do it right.

1. Safety & Security Risks Will Be Higher Than Usual

With dignitaries, international delegates, and media arriving, your property could be a target for protest activity, cyber threats, or emergency situations. Even if you aren’t directly involved in the summit, the increased presence of security, police, and potential demonstrations across Calgary, Banff, and Kananaskis will affect your operations.

2. Operations Will Be Disrupted — Staff and Guests Will Be Affected

Expect road closures, public transportation delays, and restricted access to some regions before, during, and after the summit. Protests — both planned and spontaneous — are likely. Staff may be late or unable to come in, and guest arrivals may be impacted.

  • How We Can Help:
    • Planning Tools for Managers and Campgrounds: The Guidebook and ERP Toolkit help you prepare for delays, disruptions, and alternate procedures. You can also find more information on demonstration zones and access control here
    • Staff Mental Health Support Tips Heightened security measures may cause stress for some team members. To help foster a supportive environment, we encourage the use of available resources and recommend offering remote work options where possible—particularly from June 15 to 17. To better support your team, consider taking the course Leading with Mental Health in Mind in TourismWorks.

3. Risk of Human Trafficking and Cyber Threats

Sadly, large-scale events often bring a spike in human trafficking and cybercrime. Your team needs to be trained to recognize red flags — and your systems must be secure. •
