Keeping Your Hotel Pool Compliant All Year Round

With both Alberta Health Services (AHS) and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) inspectors actively checking hotel pools for compliance, it's essential to be prepared to ensure the safety of guests and staff.

During an inspection, evaluators typically assess safe practices related to water quality, chemical storage and handling, air quality on the pool deck, maintenance procedures, and the effectiveness of your training program.

Below are three key areas that can help your property stay inspection-ready - along with resources tailored to Alberta’s hotel sector.

1. Solid Safety Systems

Establishing a strong Internal Responsibility System (IRS) is your foundation for pool safety. This means having clear processes for hazard identification, risk mitigation, and team accountability.

  • Conduct regular Hazard Assessments to catch issues early.
  • Maintain an active Health & Safety Committee, and make sure its members are trained and up to date. This instructor-led online webinar covers:
    - Roles & responsibilities of committee co-chairs and members
    - Legal obligations of all worksite parties
    - Practical strategies for effective health & safety engagement

3. Frequent Maintenance & Pool Walks

Preventative maintenance is your best defense against safety lapses.

  • Conduct regular property walkthroughs and always include the pool area.
  • Check for hazards like cluttered decks, missing signage, blocked drains, or faulty equipment.
  • Confirm all safety features (lifesaving gear, fencing, etc.) are in place and in good condition.
  • Find more information on pool regulations and operator licences on this page
