Cleaning Standards for Jetted Tubs
A potentially serious problem with jetted tubs is that bath water often does not drain completely from the pipes. This standing water may contain soap film, hair, dead skin, body oil, dirt and feces in a damp, dark environment creating ideal conditions for bacterial growth. The next time the tub is used, these bacterial pathogens come out of the pipes into the clean bath water. The bacteria can be responsible for such conditions as urinary tract, intestinal, and respiratory infections, Toxic Shock Syndrome, food poisoning, pneumonia, and skin infections.
Proper cleaning and disinfection of jetted tubs is critical to ensure that your guests bathe in a clean and safe environment. Your chemical supply company can provide you with the proper cleaning and sanitizing solution(s) for your jetted tubs. Using an accelerated hydrogen peroxide compound has advantages over using quaternary ammonium or bleach, including disinfection capabilities, cleaning efficiency and cost effectiveness.
The AHLA's Quality Assurance Team encourages you to check with your chemical suppliers to determine what products are right for your property and equipment. If you are planning renovations or upgrades at your property, consider installing a pipe-free whirlpool bath available from manufacturers, or a tub that uses air to create the desired water action.
