AHLA States Position on Alberta's Minimum Wage

The AHLA's Board of Directors has developed the association's position on Alberta’s minimum wage policy, which is:

  • End the current policy of tying Alberta’s minimum wage to the previous year’s Average Weekly Earnings,
  • Introduce a training wage for the first 500 hours of an individual’s employment,
  • Introduce a gratuity differential for staff who serve liquor only,
  • Introduce new minimum wage policy that links minimum wage to average mid-point Bank of Canada inflation rate,
  • The government should provide six months notice of wage adjustments.

The AHLA has submitted its position to the Standing Committee on the Economy, the all-party Committee of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta that is responsible for undertaking the minimum wage policy review.

AHLA Directors Perry Batke and Barry Zwueste will make a presentation to the Committee at the Legislature at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 15.  AHLA Chair Mike Shymka and Director Perry Wilford will make a presentation to the committee at the Carriage House Inn at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 23.
